Kate Nash – Spilt Milk

Kate Nash darts around a wide open field with her eyes blacked out in the video for “Spilt Milk”, and the frustration on screen matches the song. The song was written about abortion law in Ireland before the repeal of the Eighth Amendment in 2018, and Nash says the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the US made it feel pertinent again. Her summary: “not having control over your own body, not being listened to.”

The hook keeps asking who gave those in charge the right to say no, a question with no comfortable answer. It pairs traditional Irish sounds with punk energy, the mix that runs through “Cailín”, an album produced by KoOoLkOjAk, recorded on the west coast of Ireland at Stiúideo Cuan and out 22 January 2027 on Kill Rock Stars. Huw Stephens premiered the single on BBC 6 Music. A long way from the old-Hollywood sweep of “9 Sad Symphonies”, and a sharper Nash for it.
